Teaching activities

I am a professor at the Economics Department at the Federal University de Minas Gerais (UFMG, Brazil).

Since 1999, I am also associated with the Cedeplar - the Center for Development and Regional Planning at the UFMG.
Cedeplar offers a graduate program in economics.
I am currently the director of the Cedeplar.

Research interests

I am the coordinator of a research group on the Methodology and history of economics. I am also a member of a research group on the Contemporary political economy
(both at Cedeplar).

My current researches focus on two main subjects. The first is a study of David Hume's ethics and economics in the context of the Scottish enlightenment. The other is a research on the life and works of some important Russian interpreters of the Marxian critique of political economy: David Ryazanov and Isaak Rubin.

 

 

 




 


 

Other academic and professional activities

I was the editor (2006-2009) and the executive-editor (2000-2006) of Nova Economia, the journal of the Economics Department at UFMG. 

I also was one of the series editors of População & Economia, which is published by Cedeplar and the University Press of UFMG. 

Finally, I am/was the webmaster of the following sites: Cedeplar, Nova Economia, FACE, ANPEC and História do pensamento econômico

Previous activities

From 1989 to 1998 I was an economist at DIEESE, the Inter Trade Union Department of Statistics and Socio-Economic Studies.

In this period, I advised the banks employees' union in collective bargaining and I did research on the Brazilian financial system and on the Brazilian labor market. I also collaborated in training seminars for union leaders.

From 1992 to 2000, I was a board member of the Regional Council of Economists of Minas Gerais and took part in the board of the Economists Society of Minas Gerais.

I was also a member of the executive committee of the Brazilian Association of Economic History, ABPHE, from 2003 to 2005.
